Your jewellery is precious, carrying untold stories and sentiments, and we believe it deserves to be stored in something just as special. Our Alex Monroe Jewellery Boxes are handmade from rich Walnut wood with intricate Mother of Pearl details inspired by Alex’s sketches of birds, bees and blossom branches and lovingly finished with velvet lining.
We partnered with Turquoise Mountain and their skilled artisans in Jordan to design and make two jewellery boxes to cater for jewellery collections of every size! The Bees in Bloom Heirloom Jewellery Box is the larger of the two and features a hinged lid with a mirror, lift-out organiser tray and plenty of storage. Whilst our Blossoming Birds Jewellery Box features two drawers, perfect for organising your favourite daily jewels.

Handcrafted By Artisans in Jordan

When we set out to make our jewellery boxes, we knew that we wanted to work with highly skilled craftspeople to ensure that, like our jewellery, our jewellery boxes would be beautiful, handmade products.

Partnering with Turquoise Mountain and their skilled artisans in Jordan allowed us to realise this ambition. Walnut wood was cut and assembled to form the boxes. Then taking inspiration from Alex’s many sketches of birds, bees and blossom branches, they etched the designs into the boxes.

Next, Mother of Pearl sourced from oyster shells is cut to shape and size, before it is inlayed and tin threading, using traditional Levant and Damascene techniques, finished the exterior designs.

Finally the patterns are protected, boxes carefully sanded and lacquer is applied. Finishing touches from brass hinges, to velvet lining and wooden dividers are added to complete the boxes.

Illustrated By Alex

The mother of pearl detailing on our handmade jewellery boxes comes straight from the pages of Alex's sketchbooks. Days of pouring over his old sketchbooks, featuring all manner of birds, leaves, flowers and branches gave him the starting point to begin sketching again.

Alex created a series of illustrations, that in collaboration with the team at Turquoise Mountain, were redrawn so that they could be used to create the Mother of Pearl and tin threading design that adorns both jewellery boxes.

Turquoise Mountain

Turquoise Mountain is a brilliant organisation for us to partner with - not only do they help preserve traditional artisanal skills, they unite craftspeople around the world. I love that my sketches have been transformed into jewellery boxes using traditional, passed down techniques, and that they are such a celebration of these skills. Alex Monroe Founder & Creative Director

Turquoise Mountain was founded in 2006 by His Majesty King Charles III and currently works in Afghanistan, Myanmar, and the Middle East, where they combine crafts practice, training and heritage restoration to create sustainable income opportunities for artisans.

They have restored over 150 historic buildings and trained over 15,000 artisans, ensuring that alongside historic restoration, traditional crafts are revived, and skills preserved. This, in turn creates jobs and viable incomes, alongside a renewed sense of pride.

By using craft traditions to develop products for contemporary, international markets, this new generation of artisan entrepreneurs will drive economic development, whilst preserving their unique cultures and traditions.

Inspired by these incredible projects, we are very proud to have collaborated with Turquoise Mountain on the first ever Alex Monroe jewellery boxes.
